jayflyer.com (“jayflyer”, “we”) is run by Jason Lee, a sole proprietor in Ontario, Canada, trading as Jason Lee Studio. This page explains what we collect when you read the site, comment, write to us, subscribe to Jayflyer Weekly or join as a member, what we do with it, and what you can ask us to change.
The short version: we collect as little as we can, we never see your card number, and we don’t sell anyone’s personal information.
What we collect
When you read the site
Our own page-view counter records the page, the site that sent you, any campaign tags in the link, your country (from your connection, not your exact location), your device type, and how far you scrolled and for how long. It ties the pages of one visit together with a random ID kept in your browser’s session storage, which is gone when you close the tab. It does not store your IP address.
When you click one of our links to a bank, hotel or booking site, we record the link, the page you clicked it on, your country and your device type. Again, no IP address.
We also use Google Analytics, and readers who aren’t paid members see ads from Google AdSense. Both are run by Google and use cookies; see Cookies below.
When you comment, send a tip or contact us
We keep the name and email address you give, your message, and your IP address and browser type. The email address is never shown publicly. The IP address and browser type are there to catch spam and abuse.
When you subscribe to Jayflyer Weekly
We keep your email address, the page you signed up on and its language. Canada’s anti-spam law asks us to be able to show that you agreed, so we also keep the time, the words next to the form, and your IP address. We email you a link to confirm; until you click it, you get nothing else. Every issue has a one-click unsubscribe.
When you become a member
- Your email address, your handle, and your password, which is stored scrambled (hashed), never as you typed it.
- If you sign in with Google: an account ID and your email address from Google. We don’t receive your name, photo or contacts.
- Your language, your seat (Economy, Premium Economy, Business or First), your Charter 25 number if you have one, and your email settings.
- If you turn on Jayflyer Weekly: when and where you did, the words you saw and your IP address, as proof that you agreed.
- The IP address and browser type you signed up from, to stop people opening accounts in bulk.
- What you post and comment in the community, which is public under your handle.
When you pay for a seat
Payments are handled by Stripe. Your card details go straight to Stripe; we never see or store your card number. Stripe asks for your country and postal code to work out the sales tax. We keep your Stripe customer ID, the status of your subscription, its renewal date and, for Charter 25 members, the price you locked in. Stripe keeps its own record of your payments under the Stripe Privacy Policy.
How we use it
- To run your account: sign-in, your seat, your badge, and the emails you need (confirming your email, password resets, receipts and account notices).
- To send Jayflyer Weekly and deal alerts, only to people who asked for them.
- To bill paid seats and charge the right sales tax.
- To keep the community and comments free of spam, abuse and fake accounts.
- To answer you when you write to us.
- To see which pages and links are useful, so we know what to write next.
We don’t sell or rent personal information, and we don’t share your email address with partners or advertisers.
Cookies
- Sign-in cookie. Members get one cookie that keeps them signed in. The site can’t remember you without it.
- Google Analytics sets cookies to count visits and see how people use the site. You can opt out with Google’s Analytics opt-out add-on.
- Google AdSense sets cookies to show and measure ads, which can be based on your visits to this and other sites. You can turn off personalised ads in Google’s Ad Settings. Google explains more in How Google uses information from sites that use its services. Premium Economy, Business and First members don’t see ads.
- Partner sites. When you click through to a bank, hotel or booking site, that site may set its own cookies so it can tell us a visit came from jayflyer. Its own privacy policy applies there.
Who helps us run the site
These companies process data for us, only to provide their service:
- Vercel: hosts the website.
- Supabase: our database, on servers in Canada (Montreal).
- Cloudflare: our domain and image storage.
- Stripe: payments, receipts and sales tax.
- Google: “Continue with Google” sign-in, Analytics, AdSense, and our own email inbox.
- Resend: sends member emails and Jayflyer Weekly.
Some of them store or process data in the United States or other countries, where local law may let authorities access it. We may also share information when the law requires it.
How long we keep it
- Member accounts are kept until you delete yours. Deleting it removes your personal information right away. You choose whether your posts and comments are deleted or stay up as “former member”.
- Payment records (amounts, dates, tax) are kept for as long as Canadian tax law requires, which is generally six years, even after an account is deleted.
- Jayflyer Weekly subscriptions are kept until you unsubscribe. After that we keep the address marked as unsubscribed, with the dates you joined and left, so it is never emailed again by mistake and we can show you had agreed. Ask us and we’ll delete it entirely. An address that never confirms gets nothing after the confirmation email.
- Comments are kept until they are removed, by you on request or by us.
- Messages to us are kept as long as we need them to answer and follow up.
- Page-view and click records are kept for the site’s statistics. They don’t include names, email addresses or IP addresses.
Your choices and rights
- Every Jayflyer Weekly and deal alert has a one-click unsubscribe link. Members can also change their email settings and delete their account on the account page.
- You can ask to see the personal information we hold about you, to correct it, or to delete it. Email hello@jayflyer.com and we’ll answer within 30 days.
- If you aren’t happy with our answer, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada or, in Quebec, the Commission d’accès à l’information.
Security
The site runs over HTTPS, passwords are stored hashed, and card details never touch our servers. Only Jason can open the member records. No site is perfectly secure, so if something ever goes wrong with your data, we’ll tell you and the Privacy Commissioner as the law requires.
Age
Member accounts are for people 16 and older. We don’t knowingly collect information from anyone younger.
Changes
When this policy changes, we update the date at the top. If a change matters for members, we’ll email you before it takes effect.
