The number that jumps out at me on this card isn't the welcome bonus, it's the interest rate: 9.99% on purchases and cash advances, on a premium rewards card. I'd still never carry a balance on a rewards card, but for someone who occasionally does, that rate changes the math more than any perk.
The rest is simple in a way I like. Two Scene+ points per dollar on everything is a flat 2% at 1 cent per point (cpp), there's no foreign transaction fee, and you get 10 Priority Pass visits a year. What holds it back is the network and the currency: American Express is accepted in fewer places than Visa, and Scene+ points have no transfer partners to push their value past 1 cpp.
Welcome offer
Scotiabank is offering up to 100,000 bonus Scene+ points on the Platinum American Express for accounts opened between July 2 and November 1, 2026, verified on Scotiabank's page on October 13, 2026. Scotiabank values the points at $1,000 in travel ($600, $200 and $200 across the three tiers). Its larger "up to $3,000 in value" headline adds estimated foreign-fee savings, a year of everyday earning and the Priority Pass membership, so treat that figure as a valuation of the whole card rather than the bonus.
The tiers are 60,000 points for $5,000 in purchases in the first 3 months, 20,000 for reaching $10,000 in the first 6 months, and 20,000 for one purchase posted in the 14th month after opening. Anyone who held a Scotiabank personal credit card in the past 2 years, including people switching from another Scotiabank card, is not eligible.
The first tier carries most of the value: $5,000 in 3 months earns 60,000 points plus 10,000 from the card's own 2x rate. The last 20,000 points need the card open in month 14, which means paying a second $399 fee, so decide up front whether you will keep it past year one.
Fees & eligibility
The card costs $399 a year with no first-year waiver and no annual credit to offset it, and each additional card is $99. The income requirement is unusually low for a premium card, a personal income of $12,000, though the minimum credit limit is $10,000.
The headline rate is 9.99% on purchases and on cash advances, including balance transfers, less than half the 20.99% on Scotiabank's Passport cards. There is no foreign transaction fee, so foreign currency purchases are converted at the exchange rate without the usual 2.5% markup. Scotiabank notes that rates and fees can change, so confirm them in the application disclosure before applying.
Earning rewards
Earning is flat: 2 Scene+ points per dollar on every eligible purchase, with no categories to track and no cap stated on the product page. At Scotiabank's travel redemption rate of 1 cpp, that is a 2% return on groceries, gas, bills and everything else, including purchases made abroad without a foreign fee.
Hotels and car rentals booked through Scene+ Travel, Powered by Expedia earn 3 extra points per dollar, for up to 5x. The flat rate is the strength and the limit: specialized cards earn more in a single category, but few premium cards pay 2% on everything.
Redeeming rewards
Scene+ is a fixed-value program: 20,000 points take $200 off travel, which is 1 cpp. The easiest route is Apply Points to Travel: book with any airline, hotel or travel site using the card, then redeem points against that charge within 12 months, with minimum redemption thresholds applying.
You can also book through Scene+ Travel, Powered by Expedia, which is where the 5x on hotels and cars comes from. Outside travel, points cover groceries (10,000 points for $100 off at eligible grocery stores), Cineplex tickets and Home Hardware purchases, while a plain account credit returns less (3,000 points for $20). There are no airline or hotel transfer partners, so 1 cpp is the ceiling.
Perks & benefits
The headline travel perk is a Priority Pass membership with 10 free lounge visits a year for the primary cardholder, including Plaza Premium lounges, and 4 for each supplementary cardholder. Visits count per person, so a guest uses one of your 10, and anything beyond that is charged at Priority Pass's retail rate. Pair that with no foreign transaction fees and the card covers the two costs that most often add up on a trip.
The rest is lighter: Hertz #1 Club Gold membership, a 24/7 concierge, Amex Experiences presale and reserved tickets, Amex Offers, and Shell fuel savings of up to 11 cents a litre in combined value with a linked Shell Go+ account. What is missing at $399: an annual travel credit, hotel status and any airline perks.
Insurance
The insurance is broad, with some limits a notch below Scotiabank's Visa Infinite Privilege. Emergency medical covers up to $2 million per person for the first 31 days of a trip if you are 64 or under (10 days at 65 and older). Trip cancellation pays up to $2,500 per person ($10,000 per trip) and trip interruption up to $5,000 per person, and both need at least 75% of the trip charged to the card or paid with Scene+ points.
Flight delay pays up to $1,000 per person after 4 hours, but lost and delayed luggage share a single $1,000 per trip limit, and hotel burglary is limited to $1,000 at hotels in Canada and the U.S. Rental cars are covered up to $65,000 MSRP for 48 days. Purchase security runs 120 days and extended warranty doubles the manufacturer's warranty by up to 2 years, sharing a $60,000 lifetime cap, and mobile device insurance covers up to $1,000. The pre-existing condition rule looks back 180 days (365 days at 75 and older).
My take
I'd get this card if you want one simple 2% card for spending at home and abroad, with lounge visits and a low interest rate as a safety net; if your shops don't take Amex, I'd skip it.
Few premium cards in Canada pay a flat 2% on everything with no foreign transaction fee, and this one adds 10 Priority Pass visits and a 100,000-point offer worth $1,000 in travel by Scotiabank's numbers. The 9.99% rate is the unusual part: it doesn't make carrying a balance a good idea, but it makes a bad month much less expensive than on a 20.99% card.
What I'd weigh against that is acceptance and value ceiling. Amex works at fewer merchants than Visa, so you may still need a second card, and Scene+ tops out at 1 cpp with no transfer partners. There is also no travel credit to soften the $399 fee, so the math depends on spending enough at 2% and using the lounge visits.
The good
- Flat 2x Scene+ (2%) on everything, with no foreign transaction fee
- 9.99% interest rate on purchases and cash advances
- 10 Priority Pass visits a year for the primary cardholder
The catch
- American Express acceptance is narrower than Visa or Mastercard
- $399 fee with no travel credit to offset it
- Lost and delayed luggage share a $1,000 per trip limit
