This is Scotiabank's free entry into Scene+, and it earns more broadly than most no-fee cards: 3x at Sobeys, Safeway, FreshCo and the rest of the Sobeys family, and 2x on other groceries, restaurants, delivery, gas, transit, entertainment and streaming. I'd point it at anyone who shops at a Sobeys-family store and wants points without paying for them.
What makes it easy to judge is the currency. Scene+ is worth a fixed 1 cent per point (cpp) against travel or groceries, so 3x is 3% back and 2x is 2%. The trade-offs are an Amex network, a 2.5% foreign fee and insurance that stops at your phone and your purchases.
Welcome offer
Scotiabank is offering up to 10,000 bonus Scene+ points in the first three months, verified on the Scotiabank page on October 13, 2026. You get 2,500 after $250 in eligible purchases and another 7,500 once you reach $1,000, each credited about 8 weeks after you qualify. Scotiabank values the full bonus at up to $100 on travel.
The account has to be opened by November 1, 2026, whatever the date you applied. The offer excludes anyone who held a Scotiabank personal credit card, as a primary or secondary cardholder, in the past two years, including product switches.
$1,000 in three months is about $335 a month, which a grocery run or two plus a few tanks of gas covers. Because approval and account opening can take time, apply well before November 1 if you want this version of the offer.
Fees & eligibility
The card has a $0 annual fee, and supplementary cards are also $0. You need a minimum personal income of $12,000 a year, and the minimum credit limit is $1,000.
Purchases carry 21.99% interest and cash advances 22.99%, a rate that also applies to balance transfers and cash-like transactions, with no interest-free grace period on cash advances. Purchases in a foreign currency cost 2.5% on top of the exchange rate, per Scotiabank's fees page. As with any rewards card, the points are only worth it if you pay the balance in full.
Earning rewards
The top rate is 3 Scene+ points per $1 at Sobeys, IGA, Safeway, Foodland, FreshCo, Voilà, Thrifty Foods, Co-op and the other listed Sobeys-family grocers. 2 points per $1 applies to other grocery stores, dining, food delivery and food subscriptions, entertainment (movies, theatre, ticket agencies), gas, daily transit including rideshare, and select streaming services. Everything else earns 1 point per $1.
All the accelerated rates share one cap: the first $50,000 a year in accelerated-category purchases, counted from January 1, after which they drop to 1x. Hotels and car rentals booked through Scene+ Travel, Powered by Expedia earn up to 4 points per $1 in total.
Redeeming rewards
Scene+ is a fixed-value program: 20,000 points take $200 off travel, which is 1 cpp. The simplest route is Apply Points to Travel: book with any airline, hotel or travel site using the card, then redeem points against that charge within 12 months, with minimum redemption thresholds.
You can also book through Scene+ Travel, Powered by Expedia, and pay fully or partly with points. Outside travel, 10,000 points take $100 off at eligible grocery stores, 5,000 give $50 off at Home Hardware and 1,000 give $10 off Cineplex tickets, while a plain account credit returns less (3,000 points for $20). There are no airline or hotel transfer partners, so 1 cpp is the ceiling.
Perks & benefits
The most practical perk is at Shell: link the card to a Shell Go+ account and Scotiabank puts the value at up to 11 cents per litre, made up of a 3 cent instant discount, an extra 4 cents on V-Power fuel until June 1, 2027, and Scene+ points on each litre. The top figure assumes premium fuel; regular gas gets less.
The card also comes with Amex Experiences (presale and reserved tickets through Front Of The Line), Amex Offers, and up to 25% off base rates at participating Avis and Budget locations in Canada and the U.S. There is no lounge access, no travel credit and no foreign fee waiver.
Insurance
There is no travel insurance on this card: no medical, trip cancellation, rental car or travel accident cover. What it has, underwritten by First North American Insurance Company (Manulife), is phone and purchase cover.
Mobile device insurance pays up to $500 if a new phone or tablet bought on the card, or financed with every monthly bill on the card, is lost, stolen, damaged or breaks down, after a deductible of $25 to $100 and 2% depreciation per month. Purchases are covered against loss, theft or damage for 90 days, and warranties are doubled by up to 1 extra year, with a $60,000 lifetime maximum across both.
My take
I'd get this if you want a free card that pays 2% to 3% on groceries, dining, gas and transit and you're happy to redeem for travel or groceries; if you spend a lot abroad, I'd skip it.
For a $0 card, the earn list here is wide. At a fixed 1 cpp, 3% at Sobeys-family stores and 2% on dining, delivery, gas, transit and streaming beats what most free cards pay in those categories, and the $50,000 cap is high enough that most households never touch it. The Shell link adds a few cents a litre on top.
What I'd keep in mind: it is an Amex, so I'd carry a Visa or Mastercard as a backup, and the 2.5% foreign fee makes it a card to leave at home on trips. Insurance is limited to $500 of phone cover and purchase protection. If you travel enough to want no FX fee and travel insurance, Scotiabank's own Gold Amex is the step up, for a fee.
The good
- 3x at Sobeys-family grocers and 2x on many everyday categories, no fee
- Fixed 1 cpp value on travel and groceries, easy to understand
- High $50,000 annual cap on accelerated earning
The catch
- 2.5% foreign transaction fee
- No travel insurance; mobile cover tops out at $500
- No transfer partners, so 1 cpp is the ceiling
