The Scene+ Visa is the no-fee way into Scene+, and I'd point to it for someone who already shops at Sobeys, Safeway, IGA or FreshCo and wants a simple points card that costs nothing. Those grocers, Home Hardware and Cineplex earn 2 Scene+ points per dollar, everything else earns 1, and points redeem at a fixed 1 cent per point (cpp) on travel and groceries.
The trade-offs are blunt. There is no insurance included at all, and foreign purchases carry a 2.5% fee. From what I can tell, it works best as a companion to a Scotiabank Gold Amex or Passport card, feeding the same Scene+ account at no cost.
Welcome offer
The Scene+ Visa is offering up to 5,000 bonus Scene+ points in your first 3 months, verified on the Scotiabank page on October 13, 2026, for accounts opened between July 2 and November 1, 2026. You earn 2,500 points after $250 in everyday eligible purchases, and another 2,500 once you reach $1,000 within the same 3 months.
Each bonus is credited about 8 weeks after the qualifying purchases post. The offer excludes anyone who held a Scotiabank personal credit card, as primary or secondary cardholder, in the past 2 years, including people switching from another Scotiabank card.
At 1 cpp on travel or groceries, the full 5,000 points is worth about $50. The $1,000 tier is about $333 a month for 3 months, so put regular grocery and bill spending on the card early.
Fees & eligibility
The annual fee is $0, and additional cards for co-borrowers and supplementary cardholders are also $0. The minimum credit limit is $500, and Scotiabank publishes no minimum income on the product page. Purchases carry a 21.99% interest rate and cash advances 22.99%, which also covers balance transfers and cash-like transactions.
Scotiabank's fee schedule lists a 2.5% foreign currency conversion fee, so this is not a card for spending abroad. Scotiabank itself says the card may not suit you if you plan to carry a balance for a long time, prefer cash back, or want embedded insurance.
Earning rewards
Earning is built around Scene+ partners. 2x points per dollar applies at Sobeys-family grocers (Sobeys, Safeway, participating IGA, Foodland, FreshCo, Thrifty Foods and others), Home Hardware and Cineplex; everything else earns 1x.
Hotels and car rentals booked through Scene+ Travel, Powered by Expedia earn up to 4x: 1 point per dollar on the card plus an extra 3 from Scene+ Travel. Other grocery chains earn the 1x base, so the 2x grocery rate depends on where you shop.
Redeeming rewards
Scene+ points have a fixed value. 20,000 points take $200 off travel through Scene+ Travel or Apply Points to Travel, which covers travel charged to the card in the past 12 months, and 10,000 points take $100 off at eligible grocery stores. That is 1 cpp on both.
Other options are weaker or narrower: 5,000 points for $50 off at Home Hardware, 1,000 points for $10 off Cineplex tickets, and 3,000 points for a $20 account credit, which is only about 0.67 cpp. Points do not expire while you hold an eligible Scotiabank Scene+ product.
Perks & benefits
The perks are partner discounts. Link the card to Shell for up to 10 cents per litre in value at Shell Canada stations, and pay with it at participating Avis and Budget locations in Canada and the US for up to 25% off base rates.
You also get 10% off GigSky global data plans and Scotia SelectPay installment plans, including no-interest, no-fee plans on eligible Home Hardware purchases. There is no lounge access, travel credit or status, and none of the travel protections that usually come with a travel card.
Insurance
The Scene+ Visa comes with no embedded insurance. The product page lists only optional, paid Scotia Credit Card Protection, which helps cover your balance after events such as job loss or illness, and Scotiabank notes the card may not suit people who want built-in insurance.
That means no emergency medical, trip cancellation, delay, baggage, rental car, purchase protection, extended warranty or mobile device coverage. Use another card for travel and large purchases, or buy coverage separately.
My take
I'd get the Scene+ Visa if you shop at Sobeys-family grocers and want a free card that feeds the same Scene+ account as a Gold Amex or Passport; I'd skip it if you need any insurance from your card or shop mostly at other grocery chains.
What works here is the fixed value. At 1 cpp on travel and groceries, the 1x base is roughly 1% back and the 2x partners roughly 2%, with no fee and nothing to calculate. For a Sobeys or IGA household, that is a fair return for $0.
What I'd weigh is everything missing around it. There is no insurance of any kind, the 2x only applies at specific banners, and the welcome offer is small at about $50 in points. As a second card next to a Scotiabank travel card, it makes sense; as someone's only card, I'd want at least purchase protection.
The good
- No annual fee, including additional cards
- Points worth a fixed 1 cpp on travel and groceries
- 2x at Sobeys-family grocers, Home Hardware and Cineplex
The catch
- No embedded insurance at all
- 2.5% foreign transaction fee
- 2x grocery rate only at Sobeys-family banners
